Non-Compete Amendments Defeated in Utah Legislature

H.B. 81, which would have amended Utah’s current non-compete statute, was voted down in the Utah House today, 22-49-4. This comes after numerous Utah business leaders spoke out against the bill, including the newly-formed Free Enterprise Utah.

Trust me on one thing: the debate is not over. Prominent Republicans in the Legislature, including House Speaker Greg Hughes, have been outspoken proponents of more restrictions on non-competes. An in-depth study of the issue, partly paid for by the Legislature, is due to be released on February 24.

Stay tuned.
